Raila retreats to his Langata backyard after clearance by IEBC to officially begin campaigns

BY KORIR JUMA,NAIROBI,5TH JUNE,2022-The Azimio La Umoja One Kenya team has hit the ground running in popularizing their August bid after their chief Raila Odinga was cleared to contest the country’s top seat on Sunday.

Hours after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) gave Mr. Odinga and his running mate Martha Karua a nod of approval, the two led their brigade on a campaign run in Nakuru Country.

Addressing supporters at various stops in Nakuru, Odinga termed the clearance to run for office as the beginning of a journey towards the liberation dream he has for the country.

“Huu ni mwanzo wa safari mpya, safari ya ukombozi wa tatu wa nchi inayohusu ukombozi wa uchumi, vijana na akina mama,” he told supporters.

While exuding confidence that he is the sure candidate to win President Uhuru Kenyatta’s succession race in August, the Azimio leader downplayed his competitor’s victory prospects, terming them as mere donkeys in a horse race.

“Tulirauka na Martha mapema tukaenda kwanza kanisani kuombewa, kisha tukaenda kuonana na Chebekati ana kwa ana,” said Mr. Odinga.

“Akangaliaaaaa karatasi zetu akasema tick; hii farasi iingie kwa uwanja. Kuingia uwanjani tukapata punda! Kwa hivyo hii ni mashindano ya farasi na punda na tutawashinda!”

On her part, Ms. Karua promised that her administration with Odinga will weed out corruption and failed systems which have ailed the country due to poor leadership.

“The war on poor healthcare, unemployment among the youth and hunger is possible if this country is under the leadership of someone who is mature, someone who has fought for the people’s freedom throughout his career,” she said.

Mr. Odinga Ms. Karua were handed a certificate on Sunday mid-morning after presenting their credentials before the IEBC chair, Wafula Chebukati at the Bomas of Kenya.

“To Martha Wangari, the documentations are in order, and I approve of the nomination of Raila Odinga as a presidential candidate for the elections slated for August 9, 2022,” said Mr. Chebukati.

The Azimio chief becomes the fifth  aspirant to be given green light by the electoral body to run for the country’s top seat, after Kenya Kwanza flagbearer William Ruto, Roots Party leader George Wajackoyah, Agano Party’s David Mwaure and Walter Mong’are of the Umoja Summit Party.

On Monday, Odinga is set to unveil his manifesto at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.
