Police arrest six over alleged involvement in Karua’s heckling

BY NAMULONGO PETER,NAIROBI,24TH MAY,2022-Six people are currently in police custody over last week’s heckling of Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party presidential running mate Martha Karua during her homecoming in Kirinyaga County.

Kirinyaga Central Deputy Commissioner Daniel Ndege said the six were arrested for hurling stones at Karua’s motorcade in Kagumo and Kerugoya.

Ndege was speaking in Kerugoya when he distributed Ksh.19.7 million in foodstuffs to over 7,000 needy students in the area; he was accompanied by Kirinyaga Central MP Munene Wambugu.

“When Karua was returning home last week there were incidents in which stones were thrown at her procession in Kagumo and Kerugoya. Six people have been arrested and arraigned for disrupting the peace and for hooliganism,” said Ndege.

He likewise urged parents to ensure that their children are not used by politicians to promote divisive politics.

“I want parents to remind their children that the National Police Service (NPS) is not an agency you want to mess with. They do not carry stones or throw stones; they are armed,” he said.

The six arrests come after Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho directed police officers across the country to launch a crackdown on goons being hired by rogue politicians to disrupt political events.

This, the PS said, came on the back of intelligence reports from various law enforcement agencies linking hired goons to the disruption of political events in Kirinyaga County.

According to Kibicho, two local politicians are at the centre of the unrest having allegedly hired hooligans to interrupt political rallies organized by their rivals.
