CHEBUKATI:IEBC to forward candidates name to EACC, ODPP for clearance

BY JOAN WANJIKU,NAIROBI,23RD ,MAY 2022-The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission will submit names of Presidential candidates to institutions responsible for matters related to chapter six on Leadership and Integrity to establish their moral and ethical standing.

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati said the names will be forwarded to Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) for scrutiny before they are cleared to contest.

At the same time, Chebukati says Presidential Aspirants who hold degrees from foreign universities must obtain recognition and equation of their academic qualifications from the Commission for University Education before registration as candidates.

He said registration of Presidential Aspirants as candidates will take place between 29th May and 6th June 2022.

The candidates will be required to submit a list of supporters of at least 2000 registered voters in each of the majority of counties, accompanied by copies of the their identification document.

“Where there is a shortfall of signatures in numbers or reduction owing to dismissal of certain supporters, the Commission shall provide for a reasonable timeframe for a top-up to be done and for the subsequent verification of the signatures,” He said.

The Commission had received a total of fifty-eight Presidential Aspirants as at the deadline on 16th May. Out of them seventeen were political party Aspirants, one was a coalition political party Aspirant while forty were Independent candidate Aspirants.

However 11 of these Presidential Aspirants failed to submit names of their running mates.

Chebukati has now reminded the Candidates that they will be required to deliver their nomination papers to the Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission between the 8am and 1pm in the morning and between 2pm and 4pm in the afternoon starting Sunday 29th May, 2022 and Monday, 6th June, 2022 at a place designated by the Commission.
