No more voter registration until 2023 to pave way for voter register verification-IEBC

BY  JOAN WANJIKU,NAIROBI,4TH  MAY,2022-The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has begun the verification process of the voter register ahead of the August election.

As such, the ongoing voter registration has been stopped temporarily but will resume on 13th of March.

“The Commission has issued notification that the application for new registration and change in registration of voters in Kenya and for Kenyan citizens living outside the country shall be suspended from 4th May, 2022 to 13th March, 2023,” IEBC says.

The verification process which commenced Wednesday morning will give Kenyans an opportunity to verify their details once complete.

In a gazette notice dated 28th April, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati says, “The Commission notifies the public that this suspension is to enable availability of the register of voters to the public for purposes of verification of biometric data and particulars of registered voters in accordance with sections 6 A of the Elections Act, 2011.”

Chebukati says they will expedite the process and those whose data doesn’t reflect well should make their claims through IEBC office across the country.

“A person who duly applied to be registered and his or her name or biometric data has not been captured correctly in the register of voters may make a claim to the Registration Officer within the period prescribed for verification,” Chubaki said.

Once complete, IEBC will gazette the final register to be used in the general elections in August.
