BY NAMULONGO PETER,NAIROBI,23RD APRIL,2022-The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party has nullified nominations for Nandi Hills Constituency where incumbent Member of Parliament Alfred Keter had emerged the winner.
The Deputy President William Ruto-led party’s Electoral and Nomination Dispute Resolution Committee declared Keter’s victory null and void.
The committee said the election officials raised concerns over the victory, thus discrediting the whole exercise.
“The upshot of the foregoing is that the alleged allegations have been proven to the required standard. Consequently, we are inclined to allow the claim before us which we hereby do,” read a statement from the committee.
“A declaration be and is hereby issued that the decision of the Returning Officer declaring the respondent as the presumptive nominee for the position of Member of Parliament Nandi Hills Constituency is null and void.”
During the nomination exercise, the lawmaker floored seven rivals to clinch the seat in a tied contest.
He garnered 10,273 votes ahead of Kitur Benard Kibor who got 7,468 votes, followed by Chepkwony Robert Kipkorir (2,513), Limo Abraham Kipkoech (540), George Tarus (425), Chemtai Irene (388), and Lelei Lilian Cherotich (160).
Keter, who is also a vocal critic of DP Ruto, thereafter alleged that the party’s leadership wanted to rig him out.
Keter on Friday took to social media and expressed his annoyance after the nullification of his victory terming it as a ‘ridiculous’ move by the party.
“Returning Officer declaring me as the presumptive nominee for the position of Member of parliament, Nandi Hills Constituency, is null and void. !!!!! This is ridiculous. I leave it to God!” He wrote on Twitter.
