The perpetrators of attack on Raila intended to assassinate him – Makau Mutu

BY NAMULONGO PETER,NAIROBI,2ND APRIL,2022-The Raila Odinga Campaign Secretariat now claims the attack on the chopper in Soy was an assassination attempt on the former Prime Minister.

In a statement on Saturday, the secretariat’s spokesperson Makau Mutua termed the attack as a threat to the peace and stability of the country.

“The despicable and savage attack in Soy on Raila Odinga, the Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate, is a threat to the peace and stability of Kenya. Let’s call a spade what it is – the attack was akin to an attempt on his life. It could easily have resulted in grievous harm to him and members of his entourage,” he said.

He said the attack came in the midst of dangerous campaign rhetoric by their opponents from the United Democratic Alliance, led by Deputy President William Ruto.

Mutua called for speedy investigations into the Friday incident, insisting that political campaigns should not be conducted in climates of violence, fear and intimidation.

He reiterated that security organs must be involved to ensure strict adherence to the constitution and laws of the republic to maintain peace and order at all times.

“We know only too painfully what has happened in the past every time electoral violence has been orchestrated in this country. We cannot allow the enemies of democracy to take us back there again.”

The chopper that had ferried the former Prime Minister to the burial of Mzee Jackson Kiprotich Kibor in Uasin Gishu County was attacked by youths and its windshield broken.

His entourage was also pelted with stones. The ODM leader blamed the attack on Governor Jackson Mandagor and Soy MP Caleb Kositany.

Mandago has, however, denied any involvement in the incident, saying he was above such cheap schemes.

He noted that Raila and his team used his car after he landed in Eldoret for the funeral of Mzee Kibor. The governor said his vehicle was stoned during the incident at Kabenes.

“How can I scheme or plan to have my vehicle stoned,” Mandago said. He urged Police IG Hillary Mutyambai to ensure all those involved in the incident are arrested and prosecuted.

Mandago warned youth in the region against getting involved in such incidents.

“My stand on peace and unity is clearly known,” he said. Police have so far arrested fourteen people suspected to have been part of the attack.
