BY JOAN WANJIKU,NAIROBI,1ST APRIL,2022-Farmers across the country have been handed a major relief after the government subsidised the prices of fertilizers by more than half the existing price.
The National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) has reached a new two-year partnership deal with the government to have the prices of crucial commodities reduced.
The govt has set aside Sh5.737 billion to subsidize 114.000 metric tons of fertilizer to enable farmers to grow food crops.
Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya on Friday said the new prices will take effect on Saturday, April 2, 2022.
The new changes in prices announced by the CS are as follows: DAP 2,800 CAN 1,850 UREA 2,700 NPK 3,000 MOP 2,500 Sulphate Ammonia 2,500.
The new move is to cushion farmers against the high cost of planting which resulted in many using farmyard manure as an alternative for planting season.
Fertilizers were retailing as high as Sh7,000.
Farmers will be able to access the fertilisers at the NCPD stores across the country from Saturday.
