I can never be someone’s project, Raila says as he asks Mombasa residents to support his presidential bid once more

BY JOAN WANJIKU,NAIROBI,20TH FEB,2022-Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader and presidential hopeful Raila Odinga has  said he can never be someone’s project. Speaking while at the Tononoka Grounds in Mombasa on Sunday,Odinga castigated those calling him the project saying he had worked with most of them while he was the prime minister of the republic of Kenya. He termed such sentiments as nonsense .

Wanasema ati Raila ni project. Raila anaweza kuwa project? Huyu Ruto Nilimwajiri kama waziri wangu wa kilimo akaibaiba mahindi nikamfuta,” said Odinga.

He added: “Musalia Mudavadi alikuwa naibu wangu nikiwa waziri mkuu, hata Uhuru alikuwa naibu wangu, sasa naweza kuwa project yake?

Odinga  promised to bring the Mombasa free port project to life if elected in the August polls. He  said Mombasa has vital economic power in East Africa due to the port and will be one of his main agendas under his presidency.

The former Prime Minister further added that his government would establish special economic zones to boost youth employment in the area, citing Dubai as an example.

Tumesema tutajenga special economic zone kama ya Dubai ili vijana wapate kazi,”said Odinga.

The Mombasa free port project is in Kenya’s Vision 2030 development program and is set to be implemented on  a 1,000-acre free trade zone near the current Mombasa port.

The duty-free port is expected to create up to 250,000 jobs, increase direct foreign investment in the country, and boost regional trade.

Odinga was flanked by several leaders allied to his Azimio La Umoja movement among them Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho, his Kitui counterpart Charity Ngilu, as well as Nairobi County boss Ann Kananu.
