Six succumb as Kenya records 119 new COVID19 cases

BY JOAN WANJIKU,NAIROBI,2ND FEB,2022-Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has announced that 119 people have tested positive for Covid-19 from a sample size of 4, 808 tested in the last 24 hours. The positivity is now at 2.5pc.

In a statement, Kagwe said from the cases,108 are Kenyans while 11 are foreigners. 64 are females while 55 are males.

Total confirmed cases now 321, 671 and cumulative tests so far conducted are 3,233,831.

In terms of County distribution; Nairobi leads with 69 cases, Uasin Gishu 20, Nakuru 7, Nyamira 4, Kiambu, Turkana and Kwale 3 cases each, Trans Nzoia, Siaya and Busia 2 each, Garissa, Homa Bay, Laikipia, and Tharaka Nithi recorded 1 case each.

Kagwe said 574 patients have recovered from the disease with 507 from the Home-Based Isolation and Care program while 67 are from various health facilities countrywide.

Total recoveries now stand at 295,433 of whom 242,891 are from the Home-Based Care and Isolation program, while 52,542 are from various health facilities countrywide.

“Unfortunately, 6 patients have succumbed to the disease, all of them being late deaths reported after conducting facility record audits in the month of January 2022. Therefore, this pushes the cumulative fatalities to 5,593,” Kagwe said

The CS said that a total of 363 patients are currently admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 4,110 are under the Home-Based Isolation and Care program. 9 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and all of them are on ventilatory support.

Another 68 patients are on supplemental oxygen, 66 of them are in the general wards while two patients are in the High Dependency Unit (HDU).

“As of February 1st 2022, a total of 12, 652, 991 vaccines have been administered across the country. Of these, 6, 636, 392 are partially vaccinated while those fully vaccinated are 5, 753, 724,” Kagwe stated

Another 100,679 are doses administered to those between 15 to 18 years while 162,196 are booster doses.

The total number of vaccines administered in the last 24 hours is 201,745 while the total number of people fully vaccinated in the last 24 hours is 119,314.

The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose was at 63.4%. Proportion of adults fully vaccinated was 21.1%.
