14 people succumb as Covid positivity rate stands at 26.4%

BY NAMULONGO PETER,NAIROBI,7TH JAN,2021-Health CS Mutahi Kagwe has reported that 2,444 people have tested positive for coronavirus in the country from a sample size of 9,269 tested in the last 24 hours.

The CS said in a statement on Friday that the positivity rate is at 26.4 per cent.

From the cases, 2,298 are Kenyans while 146 are foreigners, and also 1,322 are females and 1,122 are males.

The youngest is a three-month-old baby while the oldest is 110 years.

The total positive cases are now 309,130, and the cumulative tests so far conducted are 3,085,450.

Nairobi recorded 719 cases, Kitui 647, Siaya 105, Nakuru 95, Kericho 76, Kakamega 68, Mombasa 66, Uasin Gishu 65, Kiambu 61, Murang’a 52, Nyeri 51, Embu 41, Busia 34, Machakos 32, and Makueni 31.

Kirinyaga 28, Kisumu 28, Baringo 27, Kajiado 24, Kilifi 17, Trans Nzoia 17, Narok 16, Kwale 15, Taita Taveta 15, Homa Bay 12, Nyandarua 11, Bungoma 10, Bomet 9, Elgeyo Marakwet 9, Garissa 9, Nandi 9, Migori 8, Nyamira 7, Meru 6, Turkana 5, West Pokot 5, Isiolo 4, Kisii 4, Vihiga 3, Lamu 2, Laikipia 1.

Kagwe said that another 14 people have succumbed to the Covid complications, one of them having occurred in the last 24 hours while the other 13 are late deaths reported after conducting facility record audits in the last week.

This pushes the cumulative fatalities to 5,425.

The number of recoveries increased by 1,066, where 1,016 patients are from the Home-Based Isolation and Care program while 50 are from various health facilities countrywide.

Total recoveries now stand at 262,133 of whom 212,363 are from the Home-Based Care and Isolation program, while 49,770 are from various health facilities countrywide.

A total of 1,208 patients are currently admitted to various health facilities countrywide, while 26,324 are under the Home-Based Isolation and Care program.

The CS said 46 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit, 25 of them on ventilatory support while 20 are on supplemental oxygen. One patient is under observation.

Another 331 patients are on supplemental oxygen and 303 of them are in the general wards. 28 patients are in the High Dependency Unit (HDU).

Vaccination

As of January 6, 2022, a total of 10,473,483 vaccines had been administered across the country. Of these, 5,996,874 are partially vaccinated while those fully vaccinated are 4,412,786.

Another 23,703 are doses administered to those between 15 to 18 years while 40,120 are booster doses.

The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose was at 56.5 per cent.

The proportion of adults fully vaccinated was 16.2 per cent.
