New survey shows Raila gaining grounds over Ruto in state house race

BY JOAN WANJIKU,NAIROBI,27TH DEC 2021-Former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, has been on a steady rise and has overtaken Deputy President William Ruto as the race to State House heats up.

In a new poll released by Infotrak on Monday, December 27, the results placed Raila ahead of Ruto in countrywide popularity. The former garnered 33 per cent while the DP managed 32 per cent.

The poll showed that the former Prime Minister has been on a steady rise and is currently the most preferred presidential candidate in the country.

Compared to past polls, the former PM improved by over 20 percentage points since the end of the year 2020.
The former premier had been ranked second most popular candidate by the 2020 end year poll with 13 per cent. In November 2021, he had improved to 25 per cent and is now at 33 per cent.

Ruto, on the other hand, had hit 44 per cent popularity countrywide by 2020 end year but dropped to 34 per cent in November 2021 and now stands at 32 per cent.

In the latest poll, Musalia Mudavadi of Amani National Congress (ANC) emerged third with only one per cent popularity across the country.

United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party was, however, ranked as the most preferred overall.

For Raila, most of his popularity emerged from Nyanza (57 per cent), Coastal region (48 per cent), Western (38 per cent) as well as Nairobi (28 per cent).

Ruto, on the other hand, most of his popularity emanated from Rift Valley (42 per cent), Central (42 per cent), Nairobi (32 per cent) and Eastern (39 per cent).

The DP nearly tripled Raila after garnering 42 per cent popularity from the Mt Kenya region, which is considered this year’s swing vote, against the latter’s 16 per cent.

In general, younger people aged between 18 and 24 years prefer Deputy President while older people (above 25 years) prefer former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
