BY JOAN WANJIKU,NAIROBI,12TH DEC,2021-Opposition leader Raila Odinga on Sunday spoke so highly of President Uhuru Kenyatta‘s track record of development.
The former Prime Minister noted that the Head of State had done so much good for the country which will long be remembered with a lot of appreciation by Kenyans.
“I want to congratulate you in front of fellow Kenyans here for the work you have done that will only be recognized many years after you have left office. We congratulate you.” Said Raila
Raila, who was given the chance to address Kenyans by President Kenyatta during the Jamhuri Day Celebrations, took the opportunity to lavish praise at Uhuru for spearheading numerous development projects in the country.
He gave an example of the historic and newly reconstructed Uhuru Gardens along Lang’ata Road in Nairobi County. President Kenyatta had ordered its reconstruction by the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) owing to its historical significance. This is the ground on which the British colonizer’s flag, the Union Jack, was lowered giving way for Kenya’s independence in 1963.
And for this and many more, Raila said President Kenyatta deserves commendation.
“Your Excellency what you have done here is great. I had asked you when you went to Namibia to go and look at what they have done. When you came back you told me, we will do better. We will actually come up with the best in Africa, how we are going to remember our past.”
“People are going to be surprised at what you have done here. It shows your vision for this nation and our country.’ He said
Raila disclosed that part of the land where the gardens sit had been irregularly allocated and would currently be in the hands of corrupt individuals had President Kenyatta not intervened.
“This land had been grabbed by land grabbers who don’t see any open space and stop grabbing them, but you (President Uhuru Kenyatta) managed to retrieve it back for the benefit of our people.” Said Raila
The ODM leader noted that the new Uhuru gardens are going to remain a place where the country was going to henceforth bury its heroes and thank them for posterity.
“Your Excellency, you say you want history unedited here. People will come to know who Waiyaki wa Inga was, who Harry Thuku was, and so many of our heroes. Many of Kenyan patriots have worked here. Historians, geologists, anthropologists, political scientists, architects, and engineers.” He said
At the same time, Odinga told off persons who have criticized his affinity matters to history whenever he finds an opportunity to speak to Kenyans. He maintains that Kenyans of all generations must understand where the country has come from in order to make informed decisions looking into the future.
“There are those who say forget about the past, we want to look at the future. The past is very important because if we don’t relook at the past, we are likely to repeat the mistakes made in the past.” He charged
But while Raila expressed admiration for President Uhuru Kenyatta’s leadership, the Head of State was also applauding the former Prime Minister for his wise counsel.
“Mheshimiwa Raila Odinga nasema ahsante sana kwa yale ambayo umenisaidia kutenda. Ningefanya makosa kama singemshukuru. Amenipatia Mawaidha.” He said
