BY JOAN WANJIKU,NAIROBI,7TH DEC,2021-Police in Homa Bay are holding a 24-year-old man who killed his grandmother along with eight animals at their home in Ruga village, Homa Bay Town constituency.
The suspect Steve Olumbe was arrested near Homa Bay Bus Park as he walked carrying a blood-stained axe and a machete.
He committed the offence on Tuesday morning at 2 am when his 70-year-old grandmother Priscilla Were was asleep.
The suspect also killed three cattle and five goats.
It is not clear what provoked the suspect to commit the offence but villagers said the man is mentally impaired.
One of his uncles, Silas Ngare, told journalists that the man used drugs to control his temper.
“The suspect and the deceased used to sleep in the same house together with a Class Seven pupil whom they are related to. He had the intention of killing the minor as well before she escaped,” Ngare said.
Homa Bay police commander Esther Seroney said security guards informed them about the incident before they arrested the man.
“They spotted the man at 4 am before they reported to area Chief Bob Lango. We arrested the suspect at the bus park,” Seroney said.
The police officer said security guards helped them get hold of him and he is now in their custody.
The body of the deceased has been taken to the Homa Bay Referral Hospital mortuary.
“We call for calm as investigations continue. The man will be taken for a mental check-up before interrogation starts,” Senorey said.
