Raila on a Kilifi campaign trail,promises to establish fishing port in Malindi

BY JOAN WANJIKU,NAIROBI,15TH NOV,2021-ODM party leader Raila Odinga has promised to establish a fishing port in Malindi in his bid to harness the blue economy.

Speaking in Malindi during his Azimio la Umoja popularization tour, Raila said the blue economy can revive the economy of the once vibrant Malindi town.

“The blue economy remains untapped. Countries like Namibia have well-established ports. In the same way, we will establish a port here in Malindi so that our people can go fishing and dock here. This is one way of making sure the blue economy is utilized,” he said

Raila also promised to have a discussion with President Uhuru Kenyatta to fast trach the compensation of over 300 people who will be displaced by the expansion of the Malindi International Airport.

“I know the government is expanding the Malindi international airport and there are some people who have not been compensated. I will discuss this with Uhuru so that the process is fast-tracked to allow people to resettle elsewhere,” he said

The former Prime Minister said the airport once expanded will bring back to life the tourism sector in Malindi.

He said his social welfare model will make sure no Kenyan will be hungry.

The former PM received defectors to the party among the Gideon Mung’aro.

Raila was accompanied by Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui, Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua, Senator James Orengo, Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo, Suna East MP Junet Mohammed, Ganze MP Teddy Mwambire, Kilifi South MP Ken Chonga, Mombasa Businessman Suleiman Shahbal, Jeremiah Kioni and a host of Kilifi leaders.

In his three-day tour of the Coast region, Raila will have a rally in Malindi.

He will make stopovers at Gede, Tezo, Pwani University, Mnarani where he will open the ODM’s Kilifi county office and a rally in Mtwapa town.
