Kenya records 99 new COVID-19 cases From 4,895 Samples

BY JOAN WANJIKU ,AIROBI,27TH OCT,2021-The Ministry of Health on Wednesday announced that 99 people contracted COVID-19 from a sample size of 4,895 tested in the last 24 hours.

The positivity rate is now at 2.0%, with total confirmed infections rising to 252,938 and cumulative tests so far conducted are 2,687,142.

From the cases, 98 are Kenyans except 1 who is a foreigner; 61 are males and 38 are females, while the youngest is a two-year-old child while the oldest is 89 years.

The cases were distributed across various counties namely; Nairobi 18, Nakuru 18, Meru 14, Kakamega 5, Kiambu 4, Embu 4, Garissa 4, Nyeri 3, Tharaka Nithi 3, Kisii 3, Marsabit 2, Mombasa 2, Kajiado 2, Nyandarua 2, Uasin Gishu 2, Busia 2, Baringo 1, Elgeyo Marakwet 1, Makueni 1, Machakos 1, Migori 1, Kericho 1, Murang’a 1, Trans Nzoia 1, Taita Taveta 1, Tana River 1 and Vihiga 1.

The ministry said 115 patients recovered from the disease, with 77 from the Home-Based Isolation and Care program while 38 were discharged from various health facilities countrywide. Total recoveries stand at 246,505.

Three patients however succumbed to the disease, all of them being late deaths reported after conducting facility audit records in July and October 2021. This pushes the cumulative deaths to 5,266.

“A total of 481 patients are currently admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 1,296 are under the Home-Based Isolation and Care program,” read the statement by Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe.

“24 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 12 of whom are on ventilatory support and 12 on supplemental oxygen. No patient is under observation.”

The statement added: “Another 161 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen with 158 of them in the general wards. 3 patients are in the High Dependency Units (HDU).”

CS Kagwe also stated that a total of 5,084, 297 vaccines had so far been administered across the country as of October 26, 2021.

Of these – he said – 3,576,875 were partially vaccinated while those fully vaccinated were 1,507,422. The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose was at 40.0%.
