Kenya records 159 new COVID19 cases, 2 deaths and 181 recoveries

BY JOAN WANJIKU,NAIROBI,9TH OCT,2021-Kenya now has a total of 251,057 confirmed positive COVID-19 infections, up from 159 new cases announced by the Ministry of Health on Saturday.

The new infections posted a  3.9 percent positivity rate and bring the total number of samples tested to 2,602,818.

“From the cases 147 are Kenyans while 12 are foreigners. 81 are females while 78 are males.” the Health Ministry said on Saturday. 

“The youngest is a four-month-old child while the oldest is 103 years.” 

Across the country, the new infections are distributed as follows: Nairobi 28, Meru 17, Turkana 12, Makueni 11, Bungoma 10, Mombasa 8, Nakuru 7, Kiambu 6, Kitui 6, Busia 5, Kericho 5, Isiolo 5, Kirinyaga 4, Uasin Gishu 4, Baringo  3, Bomet 3, Garissa 3, Kajiado 3, Machakos 2, Nyandarua 2, Marsabit 2, Migori 1, Narok 1, Nyeri 1, Siaya 1, Wajir 1 and West Pokot 1, Elgeyo Marakwet 1, Embu 1, Homa Bay 1, Kilifi 1, Kisumu 1, Laikipia 1 and Tharaka Nithi 1. 

A total of 789 patients are currently admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 1,809 are under the Home-Based Isolation and Care program. 48 patients are in the Intensive Care  Unit (ICU), 32 of whom are on ventilatory support and 16 on supplemental oxygen.

Another 266 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen with 260 of them in general wards and 6 in High Dependency Units (HDU).

Meanwhile, 181 patients recovered in the last one day, pushing the total of recoveries so far to 243,772.

“117 from the Home-Based Isolation and Care program while 64 are from various health facilities countrywide .” the Health Ministry added. 

At the same time, Kenya’s death toll from the disease hit 5,181 after two more dearth was reported on Saturday. 

According to the Health Ministry, the death was discovered after facility records from October were audited. 

The Health Ministry also stated that a total of 4,171,581 vaccines have so far been administered across the country as of October 7, 2021. Of these, total first doses were 3,126,284  while second doses were 1,045,918. 

“The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose was at 32.0%. Proportion of adults fully vaccinated was 3.8%. ,” the Health Ministry said on Friday.
