BY KORIR JUMA,NAIROBI,13TH SEPT 2021-Former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth and ex-Kiambu Governor William Kabogo are the latest entrants into the Mt Kenya unity talks, led by MP Moses Kuria, Mwangi Kiunjuri and Martha Karua.
In photos shared by The Service Party leader, Mwangi Kiunjuri on Monday, the leaders who also included former Tetu MP Ndung’u Githinji were seen holding a meeting at an undisclosed location.
“The Mt Kenya unity conversation continues; as leaders we are determined to keep it growing…something inside so strong…we all agree that we owe it to our people,” Kiunjuri tweeted.
The meeting comes after another one was cancelled over what was reported as cracks in the agenda and fears of infiltration by opponents.
Two parallel invites, one from Karua on behalf of Mt Kenya Unity Forum and another from National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi for the same meeting exposed simmering tensions between various political players from the region ahead of the 2022 polls.
Kieni MP Kanini Kega, however, insisted that the meeting had been called off mainly because of logistical challenges.
“We realised that we would end up with more people than we thought, so we decided to postpone it to enable proper planning to ensure we adhere to the Covid-19 protocols,” he said.
Kuria, Kiunjuri and Martha Karua launched a Mt Kenya party leaders caucus to push for the region’s interests ahead of the 2022 general election.
They have been meeting leaders of different parties in the Mt Kenya region in a bid to consolidate a united front in the next general elections.
Last week, Karua and Kiunjuri met Jubilee leaders among them MPs Kanini Kega and Sabina Chege, and others from different parties that have signed pre-election pacts with include Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti (Rebuild and Restore Party), Esau Kioni of the Democratic Party (DP), Mpuru Apuri (National Ordinary People Empowerment Union, NOPEU), and Thuo Mathenge (The New Democrats).
Others included the People’s Party of Kenya(PPK), Party of Democratic Unity(PDU) as well as Chama cha Kazi (CCK).
