Kenya receives 12 ultra cold chain freezers from Japan

BY JOAN WANJIKU,NAIROBI,7TH SEPT,2021-The Ministry of Health Tuesday morning received 12 ultra cold chain freezers with a storage capacity of 3 million doses from the government of Japan.

This coming a week before the arrival of 12 million Pfizer vaccine doses donated by the US government, which will be the 4th type of Covid-19 vaccines to be deployed in the country.

Speaking in a press briefing, Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Health Mutahi Kagwe noted that the 12 freezers will come in handy in the storage of vaccines especially Pfizer vaccine that requires storage of -70°.

This is described as ultra cold chain temperature.

Three of these freezers will be placed at the central vaccine stores in Kitengela while the rest will be distributed to our 9 regional stores in Nairobi, Eldoret, Kisumu, Mombasa, Nakuru, Nyeri, Meru and Kakamega. Garissa will also receive a specialised deep freezer to serve the North Eastern region.

The CS said the health ministry has been making the necessary arrangements for successful administration of all the Covid-19 vaccines deployed in the country noting that it will be expanding and strengthening cold chain facilities at a cost of Ksh 900 million from the World Bank Support.

The strengthening will include, establishment of 25 new county vaccine stores, improvement of technical capacity in 36 sub-county stores as well as expansion of storage capacity at 1,177 facilities across the country.
