BY JOAN WANJIKU,2ND AUG,2021-The Ministry of Health on Thursday received 459,300 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine from the Canadian government.
Speaking after receiving the consignment at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Health Principal Secretary Susan Mochache lauded the Canadian government for the good gesture saying the jab will go a long way in intensifying the war against Covid 19 pandemic.
This even as she warned anyone against interfering with the ministry’s effort to ensure Kenyans get government procured vaccines.
The plane carrying the AstraZeneca vaccine touched down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at around 7am Thursday morning.
In the meantime the PS has read a riot act to rogue facilities administering vaccines to Kenyans without the authorization of the ministry.
She says the crackdown on such facilities will continue and those found their licenses will be revoked.
Acting Canadian Ambassador to Kenya David Anthony on his part expressed his country’s commitment in enabling Kenya put it’s foot forward in the fight against the deadly virus.
Dr. Willis Akhwale, the chairman of the COVID-19 taskforce for vaccine deployment has revealed that a number of Kenyans are evading the AstraZeneca vaccine so as to get the new moderna COVID-19 vaccine.
He says the moderna vaccine is only for those who have not received any jab.
This even said that health workers are currently undergoing training on how to administer the moderna vaccine which arrived in the country on Monday.
Last month Kenya received 880,460 doses of Moderna Covid-19 vaccine from the United States of America.
It was the first shipment of 1.76 million doses donated by the United States via COVAX facility and is the first time that Moderna vaccines have been received in Kenya.
Moderna vaccine is the 2nd vaccine to be deployed in Kenya with Pfizer vaccine scheduled to be delivered in the country this month (August).
