BY JOAN WANJIKU,NAIROBI,1ST SEPT,2021-Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has dismissed as political, a submission by Interior CS Fred Matiang’i that Deputy President William Ruto and his properties are guarded by 257 police officers.
The lawmaker, an ally of the DP, claimed that the disclosure about the security detail of the country’s second in command is cosmetic and only meant to score political goals.
“The comments were political, cosmetic and they were somehow playing to the gallery,” the senator told a press conference at Parliament Buildings on Wednesday.
The senator spoke moments after Matiang’i revealed the details of the security and dispelled claims that Ruto’s security had been downscaled.
Cherargei rubbished the revelations even as he intensified his push to recall the Senate to discuss the withdrawal of elite GSU officers from the DP’s residences.
The lawmaker has petitioned Majority Leader Samuel Poghisio to reconvene the House after securing the support of 16 senators.
He wants the legislators in the special sitting, to resolve to summon Matiang’i, IG Hillary Mutyambai, the Presidential escort Commandant and General Service Unit Commandant.
The officers, he said, should state the reasons and circumstances that led to the withdrawal of GSU officers guarding the DP’s homes.
Senate standing orders state that either Majority or Minority leader can petition the speaker to gazette a special sitting.
Such a bid must be endorsed by at least 15 members.
