Kenya records 1,006 new Covid cases as 13 more patients succumb

BY KORIR JUMA,NAIROBI,28TH JULY,2021-Kenya on Wednesday recorded 1,006 new cases of Covid-19, bringing the country’s case load to 199,941, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe has said.

The CS in a statement confirmed that this was from a sample size of 5,584 recording a positivity rate of 18 per cent.

The cumulative tests stand at 2,109,581.

The country’s fatalities have risen to 3,895 after another 13 patients succumbed to the disease on diverse dates.

Kagwe said that there are 1,386 patients currently admitted in various hospitals across the country. Another, 3,686 patients are on the home-based care programme.

A total of 174 patients are in ICU, out of which 41 are on ventilatory support.

Also, 433 patients are separately on supplementary oxygen, out of which 387 are in general wards and 46 in the HDU.

Meanwhile, 261 patients have recovered from the disease out of which 228 were from the Homebased care program while 33 were discharged from various health facilities.

Kenya’s recoveries now stand at 187,824.

The CS  Kagwe said 1,692,793 vaccines have so far been administered countrywide.

Of these, 1,052,343 are first doses while 640,450 are second doses.

Separately, the Ministry of Health has confirmed increased demand for ICU beds in hospitals to accommodate the high number of infections.

Kagwe asked county governments to ensure availability of sufficient oxygen.

Kagwe reiterated that the oxygen should be properly piped in the various health facilities.

He spoke on Wednesday during a press conference at Afya House on Covid-19 update.

“We can already see an increase of demand of ICU beds as well as oxygen requirement,”Kagwe said.
