BY JOAN WANJIKU,NAIROBI,3RD JUNE,2021-A planned ceremony to cleanse the Agikuyu Shrine Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga has been set for Friday.
This comes after a section of elders from Mt. Kenya organized the event following the coronation of National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi as Mt. Kenya spokesman.
The elders opposed to the coronation claimed the shrine is a holy place and rituals conducted during Muturi’s event may have negative implications.
Prayers will be held at Mumbi grounds in Murang’a, thereafter 30 selected high priests of the Agikuyu will proceed to the Shrine to perform the rites.
Speaking to the media, they explained the need to cleanse Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga saying it was used for political interests, abuses traded while the shrine is meant for cultural ceremonies only.
Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria cautioned security officers from interfering with the Friday plans which he termed purely cultural.
Speaker Muturi’s installation was however protested by a section of elders who said it is wrong to have such an event being conducted at the shrine terming it as political.
The elders warned that dire consequences might befall the speaker and the people organizing the event as well as the community.
The opponents argued that making Muturi the spokesperson is demeaning the president who is the kingpin for the region.
