Kenya records 573 new Covid 19 cases as 119 patients are admitted in ICU

BY JOAN WANJIKU,NAIROBI,22ND MAY 2021-Health CS Mutahi Kagwe has announced that a total of 573 people have tested positive for coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

In a statement on Saturday, the CS said that the new cases were picked from a sample size of 5,798, with a positivity rate of 9.9 per cent.

The CS said that 535 patients are Kenyans while 38 are foreigners from today’s cases.

Also, 365 are males while 208 are females, as the youngest patient confirmed to be a 42-day infant while the oldest is 100.

The total confirmed positive cases are now 168,108 and the total cumulative tests are 1,777,034.

Fifty-eight patients have also recovered from the virus, pushing the number of recoveries to 114,452.

A total of 1,072 patients are admitted to various health facilities in the country, while 4,674 are under the Home-Based Isolation and care program.

Kagwe said that 119 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit, 21 of whom being in ventilatory support and 71 are on supplemental oxygen. Twenty-seven are under observation.

Another ninety patients are separately on supplemental oxygen with 83 of them in general wards, and seven in High Dependency Units.

Six more patients have succumbed to the virus, pushing the cumulative fatalities to 3,049.

Kisumu is leading with the highest number of cases today, recording 103 cases, Nairobi 61, Kitui 57, Kericho 43, Mombasa 39, Kisii 28, Busia 24, Nandi 23, Siaya 22, Kakamega 22, Uasin Gishu 18, Nyeri 17, Nakuru 16, Turkana 15, and Bungoma 12 cases.

Nyamira 9, Migori 8, Murang’a 8, Kilifi 8, Kiambu 8, Kirinyaga 6, Embu 5, Homabay 5, Baringo 3, Kajiado 3, Laikipia 2, Trans Nzoia 2 and Machakos, Marsabit, Meru, Narok, Vihiga and West Pokot recorded single cases each.

Kagwe said that a total of 952,967 people have been vaccinated against the virus, out of which 289,574 are aged 58 years and above.
