Kenya records 679 new COVID19 cases,743 recoveries and 18 deaths

BY NAMULONGO PETER,NAIROBI,12TH AUG 2020-Kenya on Wednesday recorded 679 new cases of Covid-19, raising the country’s total to 28,104, Health CAS Mercy Mwangangi has confirmed.

The new positives were drawn from the 6,590 people whose samples were tested within 24 hours.

This brings the country’s cumulative total tests to 369,091.

From the new cases, 658 were Kenyans while 31 were foreigners.

Speaking during the daily Covid-19 briefing, Mwangangi said in terms of gender, 400 were male and 279 were female. Age wise, the youngest was a one -month-old infant while oldest was 87 years old.

Some 743 patients have now recovered from the disease, bringing  the total number of recoveries in the country so far to 14,610 .

A total of 685 of those discharged were from the home-based programme, while 58  were discharged from various health facilities.

However, 18 more patients succumbed to the virus, raising fatalities in the country to 456. Fifteen of the fatalities had pre-existing health conditions while three had no known health conditions.

Among those who succumbed was Kemri director of corporate services Kamau Mugenda.

Mwangangi described him as an astute manager.

Mwangangi noted that Kenya and South Africa are frontier countries in African in terms of vaccine trials.

“We have collaboration with University of Oxford and different other partners in terms of ensuring that when this vaccine is found, Kenya has a stake in,” she said.
