BY CORRESPONDENT,MAANZONI,7TH JULY,2020-Three people have died after three vehicles, were involved in an accident along the Nairobi – Mombasa Highway on Tuesday morning.
Machakos County Government Emergency Services Director David Mwongela told the media that two trucks collided at an intersection near Maanzoni Lodge.
As a result of the collision, a Toyota Probox was knocked off the road.
The two truck drivers lost their lives on the spot along with one turnboy.
By the time of publishing, first responders were trying to rescue the driver of the Probox who was trapped in the wreckage.
The Maanzoni area is considered a black spot over many accidents that have happened.
According to NTSA, as of April 13, the number of passengers who have lost their lives on the road has gone down compared to the same period in 2019.
In the latest crash survey by the authority, 156 passengers had died by April 13 compared to 205 who succumbed by the same period in 2019.
On the other hand, more pedestrians (367) have lost their lives since the year began compared to 348 who died in 2019.
The low numbers can be attributed in part to the reduction in travel following the Covid-19 restrictions that had been placed.
President Uhuru Kenyatta lifted the cessation of movement imposed in Nairobi and Mombasa and travelling is expected to resume.
However, concerns have been raised over the 9 pm – 4 am curfew which might affect long-distance travellers who require more time to reach their destinations.
