Reprieve for Ledama Ole Kina in fight over powerful Senate committee seat as high Court barred removal

BY NAMULONGO PETER,NAIROBI,11TH MAY,2020-The high court in Nairobi has temporarily barred removal of Senator Ledama Ole kina as the chairman of a powerful Senate team or even nominate any other person.

The High Court certified as urgent the matter involving election of Chair of the County Public Accounts and Investments Committee (CPAIC).

The committee is tasked with oversight of the expenditure of billions of shillings given to all 47 counties under the Division of Revenue and other conditional grants.

There has been a standoff over control of the Committee Chair position following the election of Ole Kina as CPAIC chair.

He had garnered five votes against his rival Sam Ongeri (Kisii Senator) who got 4 votes.

However, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) expressed “dissatisfaction with the conduct and outcome of the elections.”

“We intend to withdraw our membership from the said committee until an appropriate resolution can be made,” Senator James Orengo said.

In a letter to the Speaker, Orengo also notified the Senate of discharge and removal of the Narok Senator from the Senate Business Committee in accordance with Standing Order 190.

A tough-talking Ole Kina however dismissed the move and defiantly went on to chair several meetings as CPAIC chair.
