Embattled Nairobi governor Mike Sonko summoned to court in Voi over assault and resisting arrest charges

BY JOAN WNAJIKU,NAIROBI,16TH DEC 2019- Nairobi  governor Mike Sonko who is facing corruption charges has been summoned to Voi court on Wednesday to face assault and resisting arrest charges, failure to which a warrant of arrest will be issued against him.

Police Spokesperson Charles Owino says  that Sonko assaulted a senior police officer at the Voi airstrip during his dramatic arrest on December 6, soon after the Director of Public Prosecutions indicted him for corruption following an investigation by the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC).

“In this process, he assaulted and injured a senior officer who was leading the team and damaged media equipment,” reads statement.

EACC said Sonko was arrested while fleeing to escape.

Sonko is out on bond after pleading not guilty to corruption-related charges in a Sh357 million scandal.

THe court granted  him Sh15 million cash bail and ordered to stay away from office until his case, in which he is charged alongside county government officials and suppliers, is heard and determined.
