BY NAMULONGO PETER,15TH DEC 2019-Kenyan athlete and the greatest marathoner Eliud Kipchoge has been rewarded once more making him one of the most popular sportsman in the year 2019. Kipchoge who is the only human to have ever run a marathon in under two hours was crowned the BBC World Sport Star of the Year, 2019 on SATURDAY 14 DECEMBER.
The 1:59 man overcame tough from American gymnast Simone Biles, South Africa’s Rugby World Cup-winning captain Siya Kolisi, Australian cricketer Steve Smith, American golfer Tiger Woods and USA footballer Megan Rapinoe, who co-led her team to World Cup victory.
Kipchoge emerged the best above the rest in the exercise carried out through an online public vote.
On Friday Kipchoge was granted an Honorary Doctorate of Laws degree by the University of Exeter.
The university praised Kipchoge, a clear indication that the world champion continued to attract accolades from all over the world.
“Eliud Kipchoge is seen as the greatest marathon runner of all time. During an unparalleled career, the Kenyan distance-running great has won 11 out of 12 official marathon races, claiming the Olympic title, eight Marathon Major victories (four London, three Berlin, and one Chicago Marathon) and is also the owner of the official world record,” read an excerpt of the university’s statement regarding the Kenyan phenom.
The marathoner delivered his ‘moon-landing’ moment by crossing the finish line in a mind-blowing 1:59:40 in Vienna, as he delivered on his pledge to prove ‘No Human Is Limited.
He was also recognized with an Honorary Doctorate in Science by the Laikipia University on December 6, recognizing his contribution to the field of sports.
It will be remembered that Kipchoge who is the Olympic marathon champion and World Marathon record holder was also crowned as the 2019 World Athletics Male Athlete of the year on November 23, beating four other contestants to retain the award during the World Athletics Gala in Monaco
