Nyong’o threatens to withhold doctors’ salaries as dispute over CBA implementation persists

BY CORRESPONDENT,KISUMU,14TH DEC 2019-Kisumu County Governor Prof Anyang Nyongo  has threatened to withhold salaries for striking doctors, terming industrial action by the doctors’ union unwarranted.

The warning  comes even as Governor Prof Anyang Nyong’o announced that his cabinet had approved the promotion of all the 128 doctors serving in various county hospital.

“The development was duly communicated to the doctors union, Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU),” Nyong’o said.

He said that it is therefore inappropriate and unfortunate for the union to engage in any unwarranted industrial action.

The Governor said that his administration will take a roll call of doctors and ensure they do not get pay for the days they will be out of their work stations.

However in a swift rejoinder , KMPDU Nyanza branch chairman Dr Kevin Osuri rubbished the threats noting that doctors will only resume their jobs once a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) the union signed with the county government is fully implemented.

Osuri said the path the county is taking will worsen the situation since the doctors are lawfully on strike.

“The union gave the county government a longer period to negotiate with the doctors but they declined to use the opportunity,” he said.

Osuri told Governor Nyong’o to personally take charge of the matter and address the concerns being raised by the doctors.

“We ask the county government of Kisumu please wake up and sort out the mess in the county, we ask the Governor to personally take charge and ensure doctors get what they negotiated” Osuri said.

Kisumu Civil Society Groups Friday called upon the national government to step in and help the county deal with the doctor’s strike that has paralyzed operations in public hospitals.
