BY JOAN WANJIKU,NAIROBI,10TH JULY 2019-This year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations on October 20 will be hosted by the Mombasa county. So far four counties have hosted national celebrations traditionally held in the capital, Nairobi.
Other counties that have hosted national celebrations are Kakuru, Kakamega, Machakos and Narok.
President Uhuru Kenyatta accompanied by Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho visited the Mama Ngina Waterfront project on Tuesday where senior government officials who spoke in confidence said this year’s celebrations will be held.
Despite the delays in completing of the Sh460 million project, President Kenyatta expressed his satisfaction with the progress made by Mombasa County in setting up the recreational park.
The project which was commissioned on January 7 this year was supposed to be completed by May 31, but due to changes in designs, its completion has delayed.
The Mama Ngina Waterfront Park project sits on a 26-acre parcel of land facing the Indian Ocean.
The transformation of Mama Ngina Drive into a modern public facility is part of ongoing efforts to restore the glory of Mombasa as a leading tourist destination in the region, she said.
During the launch of the project, President Kenyatta had issued a 150-day deadline to the contractor, Suhufi Agencies Limited, to finish the project.
The contractor employed over 300 local youth to carry out the project.
However, the Ministry of Tourism introduced changes to the initial designs of the project two months when the project was about 45 per cent.
“The contractor was forced to wait for further instructions, which slowed down the progress of the work, but currently the work is now moving on well,” said an official on ground.
