BY KORIR JUMA,NAIROBI,20TH MARCH 2019-President Uhuru Kenyatta’s candidate for the position of Education cabinet secretary Prof. George Makokha is on his way to officially assuming his official duties after parliament on Wednesday approved him amid praise from MPS.
While debating a special motion on the report following Makokha’s vetting last week, the lawmakers heaped praises on Prof. Magoha’s achievements record during his numerous years in public service dating back to 1990s, adding that President Uhuru Kenyatta had made the right decision in nomination him.
Minority Leader John Mbadi said , the outgoing Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) Chairperson convinced the parliamentary committee during his vetting and is the right fit for the docket since he is widely experienced and exposed due to his numerous travels across the globe.
Mbadi who is a member of the Committee on Appointments, added that the report to approve Prof. Magoha’s nomination was unanimous as no MP expressed any disagreement with the findings.
“Prof. Magoha is a person of strong character, and will tell you his mind the way it is. He will not lie to you so that he can convince you to support him. That type of person is the one we need in the Ministry of Education,” said deputy leader of majority, Jimmy Angwenyi.
On his part ,Kiminini MP Chris Wamalwa, who taught alongside the Professor of Surgeon at UoN, supported his imminent appointment saying Prof. Magoha had been successful at every job he has ever been given; citing his achievements while at the university as well as his tenure at KNEC.
“When you do a trend analysis, you can see that everywhere Prof. Magoha has been going he has been successful. And when you extrapolate that trend, you realize that even if he becomes the CS of Education, I have no doubt he is going to succeed,” said Mr. Wamalwa.
Seme MP Dr. Nyikal James, on his part, opined: “I know his no-nonsense stance may sometimes be mistaken by some people as arrogance, but I can tell you Prof. Magoha is humble enough to quickly accept if there is a mistake that he has made. We need him at this time when we have so many commendable projects in the Ministry of Education that need harmonization and competent management.”
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino who earlier on during Makokha’s vetting was locked out of the session by Speaker Justin Muturi, him for having accorded him a second chance when he was suspended from UoN, further terming him as “a man who means what he says, and says what he means.”
Mr. Owino who held the helm of students organization at UoN r during Prof. Magoha’s tenure as V.C supported his appointment saying his appointment will help strengthen education sector in the actuary .
