BY KORIR JUMA,NAIROBI,28TH SEPT 2018-In what can be seen as a sure way to conflict between Nairobi governor Mike Sonko and Nairobi County Assembly ,the Education Committee in the assembly wants the Executive to provide a reconciled list of all beneficiaries of bursary kitties in the county, especially Governor Mike Sonko’s bursary kitty.
This follows realization that the county under the current leadership had dropped all the students whose fees were being paid by the last administration.
The county legislators complained that the issuance of bursary in the county has been turned into a political tool used to punish those perceived to be from a different political outfit from the ruling party.
“We want an audit conducted to establish which students have been benefiting and public the list so that we can deal with this issue once and for all,” said Committee Chairperson who is the Kayole North MCA, Samuel Ng’ang’a.
Appearing before the committee, Education Executive Janet Ouko agreed that they only gave bursaries to needy Form one’s who joined this year, adding that they are facing financial constraints due to budgetary allocations.
“There is no law that you have to be supported during the entire four years we gave money to the deserving students
She explained that currently 10,030 top three students from each of the 205 primary schools who were proposed by their head teachers benefit from the kitty.
She states that they only had Sh100 million for the bursary and it was difficult to cater for the previous students.
A member of the Committee Makongeni MCA Peter Imwatok complained that students should not be victimized due to political affiliations.
“These are students not Sonko’s or Kidero’s .It’s not their fault that Kidero is no longer a Governor,” said Imwatok.
On his part Nyayo Highrise MCA Kennedy Oyugi criticized the manner in which the County bursary kitty has been diverted from its main purpose of benefiting the needy and bright students but is now being given even to the affluent in society.
