BY EURIDICE NZIOKA,NAIROBI,18TH SEPT 2018-Controversy has rocked circumstances under which infants died at the pumwani Hospital after top Nairobi county officials who visited the institution on Tuesday gave a contradictory statement different from Governor Mike Sonko. The officials have instead defended the management against negligence claims.
Nairobi County Health Executive Veska Kangongo, who led a team to the hospital, says circumstances under which the deaths occurred cannot be blamed on anyone.
This is in sharp contrast to assertions by Sonko that the hospital management, which he suspended on Monday, is to blame after finding bodies stashed in boxes during an impromptu visit.
According top the officials , the bodies were 11 and 12 as reported by Governor Sonko.
Nairobi Chief Officer Mahat Jimal defended the management, saying the deaths were a result of still births and other related complications, while one had been taken there by the mother for safe disposal.
In the meantime , hospital management remains suspended amid an investigation by a multi-agency team from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Health Ministry and the county to determine if they were culpable and recommend the way forward.
This comes even as Director of public prosecution Noordin Haji gives DCI two weeks to hand over full report of investigations.
