Gor Mahia’s hopes of a quarter-final place in the CAF Confederations Cup dashed after losing to USM Alger 2-1

BY SAMSON MBII,NAIROBI,29TH AUG 2018-Gor Mahia’s hopes of a quarter-final place in the CAF Confederations Cup  have been dashed after they were defeated 2-1 by  USM Alger .A goal in each half by Prince Ibarra and Amir Sayoud gave USM a 2-0 lead before Jacques Tuyisenge pulled one back for Gor in the 83rd minute.

Gor Mahia looked composed from the onset knocking the ball around with much ease and could have opened the scoring in the eighth minute after George Blackberry Odhiambo played Jacques Tuyisenge through but he was flagged offside before he could release his shot. USM mounted a counter immediatly and were awarded a penalty when Harun Shavaka was deemed to have handled the ball inside the box when his hand clearly looked to be in a natural position.

Up stepped Mohammed Meftah who failed to hold his nerve as his penalty was tipped over by Peter Odhiambo’s trailing leg with the Algerian shooting straight at the keeper. Odhiambo’s fine form in goal has so far seen him face three penalties without conceding a single one. K’Ogalo had two players in the book in the opening 30 minutes as Humphrey Mieno and Ernest Wendo was shown yellow cards for fouls.

It was in the 36th minute that  Prince Ibarra opened the scoring for USM with a looping header at the back post after Cherifi whipped a wicked cross. Gor Mahia had a chance four minutes in the halftime break when Tuyisenge was feed through by Kahata but he took too much time on the ball with his shot getting blocked. USM went in the break leading 1-0.

Gor Mahia continued to probe the USM defense in the second half but the Algerian defense was proving tough to break down. Abdelrauf Benguit squandered a change at the stroke of the hour mark when a free-kick deflected off the wall on to his path. In the 63rd minute, Thierry Forger plotted a double substitution bringing in Amir Sayoud for Fauzi Yahya and goal scorer Prince Ibarra.

Dylan Kerr also rolled his dice withdrawing Karim Nizigiyimana for Samuel Onyango to add the much needed attacking impetus. USM exhausted their substitutions when they brought in Mokhtar Benmoussa for AbdelKader Meziane.

The USM subs worked in the 81st minute when Mokhtar Benmoussa picked up the run of Amir Sayoud with a low cross and his first time tap in rattled the back of the net to take the tie beyond Gor Mahia.

K’Ogalo pulled one back to set up an interesting final minutes when George Odhiambo delivered a sumptuous cross that was headed on goal by Charles Momanyi with Jacques Tuyisenge guiding it in with a header. The goal came in a little too late for Gor as USM Alger held on for the win.

This means that Gor Mahia are now out of the  tournament.
