Gor Mahia beats Leopards to lift the 2018 league title

BY SAMSON MBII,25TH AUG 2018-Gor Mahia FC are the 2018 Kenyan Premier League champions after beating AFC Leopards 2-0 in a match staged at Moi International Sports Centre Karasani on Saturday 25 August evening.

Before going to the mouth watering derby  Gor Mahia FC needed just a point to retain the league title.  They had amassed 68 points from the last 27  matches having won 21 of those. The side managed to pick maximum points from the tie thanks to goals by Boniface Omondi and Bernard Ondiek.

Both sides started off by testing their opponents defends. Earlier chances saw Ondiek fail to head the side into the lead at the 16th minute. At the other end, Wesley Onguso nearly conceded an own goal after AFC Leopards mounted pressure upfront. The former Sofapaka man was lucky that his header went over the bar.

At the 31st minute, Gor Mahia FC managed to break the deadlock. Gor Mahia disposed AFC Leopards in the midfield and Omondi turned Leopards defenders inside  out before hitting the ball past Ezekiel Owade in the opposing goal.

Gor Mahia FC once again dispossessed Leopards in the midfield, this time round Okeyo challenge on Baker Lukooya saw Gor Mahia win the ball and Karim Nizigiyimana found Olouch on the left wing, the former fed oncoming Ondiek who whipped past Owade for a 2-0 lead.

 

Interrupted

The match was halted for several minutes with AFC Leopards protesting Gor Mahia’s challenges that saw them with the ball to score. Leopards had a chance to come back in the game after they won a penalty in the additional minutes of the final half after Charles Momanyi’s handball. Whyvonne Isuza, however, sent his penalty wide and the scoreline remained unchanged.

In the second half,  Eugene Mukangula and Vincent Oburu were called in as AFC Leopards tried to get a result from the match. AFC Leopards attempts to recover were futile with Isuza skying his short after Alex Orotomal delivery. Orotomal also had his attempt at goal denied by Fredrick Odhiambo.

When the referee, blew the final whistle, Gor Mahia fans jumped into a celebration, having won their 17th league title.
