Three public universities are the top beneficiaries of research funding

BY KORIR JUMA,NAIROBI,14TH AUG 2018-Three public universities have been listed as  leading in the list of  beneficiaries of research funding.

The three are  University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, and Moi University  at Sh538 million, Sh457 million, and Sh302 million respectively.

This is according to a study  conducted by CPS International indicates.

The study conducted between May and this year, indicate that  Strathmore, Mt Kenya, and Aga Khan universities are top beneficiaries of research funding among private universities, the three listed as seventh, ninth, and tenth overall in the combined category of public and private universities.

The study indicated that the research endeavors for the three universities were funded to the tune of Sh100 million, Sh87 million, and Sh75 million respectively.

CPS International is however calling for more funding with the current allocations for research falling far below 2 per cent of GDP, a threshold recommended by UNESCO.

CPS International Research Director, Prof Herman Manyora also urged the private sector to fund research in universities to bridge the existing gap.
