BY JOAN WANJIKU,NAIROBI,19TH JUNE 2018-West Kenya sugar company has denied reports that it has been buying contraband sugar laced with mercury and other harmful substances and repackaging the same for local consumers.
In a strongly worded statement send to the press on Tuesday ,the Company’s managing director Tejveer S. Rai says the sugar miller has since its inception believed and guided with the record of quality as far as its two brands that are produced Kabras Premium White Sugar and Kabras Brown Sugar are concerned.
The managing director says the Kakamega county based miller has so far invested heavily in an ultra-modern, sugar processing plant and take great pride in growing their market share by producing exceptional sugar.
”Over 60,000 small-scale sugar cane farmers are contracted by West Kenya Sugar Company Ltd to supply the factory with local sugar cane”.said the statement
The Company continuously invests in its contracted farmers and has invested over KSH 400 Million in the last 18 months in cane development. He further added that the company prides itself in paying our farmers 7 days from delivery and have had no arrears to farmers since inception in 1981.
With over 3,500 staff members the factory has provided job opportunities as well as supporting the local community through scholarship funds, medical outreach programmes, building of a maternity hospital, building primary schools, and various other Corporate Social Responsibility activities.
The company therefore assured all farmers, customers and stakeholders that the quality of their brand, Kabras Sugar, which is available at all leading outlets in the country, meets and indeed surpasses all the requisite quality standards.
The MD has also promised that the r Company remains committed to operating within the highest possible ethical standards in the manufacture of quality table ready branded sugar
