BY CORRESPONDENT,MACHAKOS,16TH JUNE 2018-Another consignment contraband sugar has been seized in Matuu town in the ongoing crack down on counterfeit goods in the country.
According to Machakos County Commissioner Matilda Sakwa who confirmed the incident ,says police raided Makutano stores in Matuu market late Friday and recovered 1000 bags of contraband sugar following a tip-off from the public.
“We also found two lorries that were used to transport the consignment to the shop. They have been impounded at Matuu Police station,” Sakwa said.
“The government will intensity raids in the area to crack down on illicit traders and their counterfeit goods. We do not want to risk lives of consumers in the county,” Sakwa added.
This comes just days after the first consignment was nabbed in Eastleigh .After samples were taken to the government chemists the sugar was found to contain mercury and copper traces.
The consignment had 1,474 bags (50Kgs) of sugar, clearly labelled as not being suitable for direct human consumption.
On Tuesday, detectives seized more than 1000 bags of sugar and a mass scale packaging machine worth Sh25 million at a warehouse in Ruiru, Kiambu County.
Officers from the Kenya Bureau of Standards were expected to visit matuu on Saturday to ascertain the quality of the sugar.
The government has since declared total war on contraband goods in the country.On Thursday Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi addressing the press at the DCI headquarters said the crackdown has since been launched across the country.
