Government declares total war on contraband goods

BY NAMULONGO PETER,NAIROBI,13TH JUNE 2018-Government has declared total war on manufacture,sale and import of contraband goods in the country.

Addressing the press at the directorate of criminal investigations in Nairobi on Wednesday,interior cabinet secretary Fred Matingi says time was up for all those dealing in fake commodities.

The CS who was accompanied by  deputy head of public service WANYAMA MSIAMBO says already they are carrying out investigations across the country with the aim of arresting more people especially owners of industries producing those products .

Matiangi spoke after  over 1100 bags of contraband sugar as well as cooking oil and other fake household goods confiscated in Ruiru and Eaisleigh  were paraded before journalists.

“I am shocked personally over what we’re doing to our country. Its mind boggling,” Matiangi said at the DCI headquarters.

He said most of the seized products are injurious to the health of people.

“We ain’t seen anything. It’s going to be rough. It is hurting the economy. It’s hurting our health.”

Matiangi said the interior ministry the backing of President Uhuru Kenyatta in the ongoing war against illicit trade which he said was hurting the economy due to tax evasion.

“We have firm instructions from the President to proceed without fear, without favour.”

This comes after a government chemist report  released on Wednesday showed  that   contraband sugar  that was shown to journalists contains mercury and copper.
