BY SAMSON MBII,NAIROBI,21ST MAY 2018-The Mashemeji derby between hosts AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia scheduled for Saturday 26th May at Bukhungu Stadium will not go on to give room for Harambee Stars friendlies against Swaziland and Equatorial Guinea.
Speaking during the GOTV Shield Cup draw, FKF President Mwendwa said:
“We have to make hard decisions and I know some people will not agree with us but we have to lead.”
Mwenda added that Harambee Stars coach Sebastian Migne asked for the friendlies to be postponed if he cannot have a full squad but his decision will stay as clubs have to release their players.
“If we have to be ready for Ghana, then we have to start preparing now. I am stating here now and clear that there will be no derby this weekend, “ Said Mwendwa
“The contractor at Kasarani also told us we have to give him a month to make the pitch at Kasarani ready. We cannot allow the derby to be played anywhere else in some other pitch to avoid incidents,” added Mwendwa.
Harambee Stars friendlies have been shifted to Machakos Stadium.
However the move is likely to put FKF and KPL on collusion after KPL it stated that the derby will proceed as planned.
“The game is outside the FIFA calendar so it is not a must for us to shelve those games. I really think the coach should plan with the squad that is available and probably rotate the squad for the two games,” KPL Chief Jack Oguda said.
