BY EURIDICE NZIOKA,NAIROBI,16TH MAY 2018-Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko becomes the first governor to have his security team reduced with 13 officers been withdrawn , leaving him with two.Sonko has two other bodyguards for his Nairobi and Machakos homes.
The same fate will also befall Senators who will be left with one bodyguard and an armed driver.
The move follows an order issued by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i who wants members of the public and their property protected.
A memo to county commanders asks them to confirm the number of police officers in their areas “as a matter of urgency”.
Governors are supposed to have a maximum of four bodyguards but most of them have exceeded the limit.
Officers will be withdrawn from other county chiefs, senators, parastatals and others VIPs as well and assigned general duties.
On Tuesday, Turkana Governor Josphat Nanok said police laxity is to blame for killings in Kapedo and demanded that they do their work properly.
Last week, the Governor accused the Interior ministry of neglecting Kapedo as rampant killings turn to “genocide”.
He protested in a letter to Matiang’i and Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet.
The withdrawal, effective July 1, is part of a plan to recall 5,000 officers irregularly attached to VIPs.
