BY CORRESPONDENT,MANDERA,4TH MAY 2018– Three Quarry workers doing mining were killed early on Thursday by suspected al Shabab militants when they carried out an attack in a quarry in Shimbir Fatuma in Mandera county.Two other miners working at the same quarry sustained injuries during the attack.
Residents Who spoke to WWW.UPESINEWS.CO.KE said that the miners were living in the quarries.
On 2015 December, Mandera county ordered all quarries closed immediately to save workers from terror attacks.
However, some of the workers working in the quarry have expressed displeasure with the move which they say it is unfair.
The then county police boss Job Boronjo said several quarries have been attacked.
“The government is not willing to take chances anymore,” he said.
More than 3,000 people, mostly non-residents, rely on the mines for upkeep.
The quarry attacked on Thursday is about 65 kilometres from the Kenya-Somalia border.
