IPOA launches investigation into alleged murder of Meru university students leader by police

BY KORIR JUMA,NAIROBI,28TH FEB 2018-A day after an ugly scene at Meru university of science  and technology resulted to the death of students leader,Independent police oversight Authority (IPOA) has sent its officers to investigate the incident.

The student leader Evans Njoroge was killed on February 27 at around 1 pm during demonstrations against several issues at the university which students do not agree with among them school fee increase as well as poor infrastructure .

“IPOA has dispatched its Rapid Response Unit to investigate the incident with a view of establishing circumstances of the shooting,” head of communications Dennis Oketch said.

Oketch in a statement on Wednesday,said if the officer is culpable he will face the full force of the law.

“Ones the investigations are done, the Authority will make recommendations and forward the investigation file to the ODPP for his attention,” he said.

Oketch appealed for witnesses to the incident to contact the Authority.

Njoroge had been vocal in his push for students’ rights.

His death comes just three weeks after he accused the university’s management of increasing fees and failing to adhere to guidelines by the Education ministry.

Earlier in the day the students held demonstrations to protest the killing of their leader calling for the arrest and prosecution of those who did it.
