BY CORRESPONDENT,MERU,27TH FEB 2018-Student upheaval at Meru university of science and Technology has resulted to death of a student leader after he was shot and killed by police in riots that were witnessed.
WWW.UPESINEWS.CO.KE has learned that Evans Njoroge, was together with his fellow students as they took to the streets to protest what they termed as ill-treatment by the school vice principal. They were also demanding for his immediate resignation.
Angry students had blocked the Igembe – Maua road by burning tyres and erecting barricades forcing police to engage and this resulted in the death of Mr. Njoroge.
The arrival of the police did not help the situation but only made things worse after the protesting students turned violent after the police arrived and started engaging the students in running battles. Police were accused of using live bullets to deal with the marauding students.
Those who spoke to our reporter have since accused the vice chancellor of failing to deliver on his promises.
The students have also lamented about the school’s infrastructure which they said is under developed compared to other institutions in the area despite the higher fees they pay.
