BY EURIDICE NZIOKA,NAIROBI,13TH FEB 2018-Just three months after Tanzanian authority destroyed over 6000 kenyan chicks worth thousands of shillings, the same act has been reported once again. This is after Tanzania burnt 5,000 one-day old chicks illegally imported through the northern Namanga border with Kenya.
According to the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Livestock, Maria Mashingo, the unnamed importer did not have the necessary documents.
Tanzania says the move to destroy the chicks is aimed at preventing the spread of bird flu.
“There is no need of destroying an entire chicken sector because of only 5,000 chicks,” said Ms Mashingo.
About three months ago, Tanzania set alight over 06,400 day-old chicks worth about Sh577,000 impounded at the same border point.
The move has since been condemned by animal enthusiasts from both countries and across the region.
There has also been reduced trade activities between the two neighbours owing to the move.
