Police lobby teargas canisters at civil society organizations protesting against media shut down in Nairobis

BY KORIR JUMA,NAIROBI,5TH FEB 2018-Peaceful protest organized by civil society organizations in Nairobi against the move to  shut down media houses was met by opposition meted on protesters by  Police  who  lobbed teargas canisters at the activists .

The activists who had peacefully matched peacefully from Uhuru park were seeking the audience of interior CS Fred Matiangi’i when they were met by the police.

The Activists led by the Kenya Human rights commission (KHRC) were protesting the failure by the government to follow court orders and switch on the media houses that had been shut down earlier in the week.

Addressing the press during the protest KHRC Executive director George Kegoro  condemned the media shutdown saying the move has dealt a blow to freedom of the media which the country has fought greatly to achieve .”We can not be talking about shutting down the media in the 21st century it is unfortunate that this government does not have any respect for the freedom of the media.”said Kegoro.

The activists want the government to respect the constitution.

They  also unveiled an online campaign dabbed ‘Not in my country.’ it is geared towards condemning acts of lawlessness being perpetuated  by government forces.
