BY JOHN WERU,NAIROBI,2ND FEB 2018-The Kenya conference of catholic bishops (KCCB) has condemned in the strongest terms possible the acts of lawlessness being perpetrated by government and the opposition in the country.
In a statement send to newsrooms and signed by KCCB chair bishop Philip Anyolo, the bishops have accused the government for shutting down the three Television stations in the country a move they say threatens to erode gains made in promoting freedom of the press in the country.
They say the act do not reflect what the law says concerning the freedom of the media.
The bishops also urged the government not to interfere with the work of journalists in the country noting that world over journalists are free to do their work and as long as they dont infringe on anybody’s rights they should not be victimized.”Journalists enjoy freedom to perform their duties without interference and any effort to curtail these freedoms should not be allowed”.said the statement.
The catholic bishops have further called upon the government and the opposition to desist from any acts that may bring divisions among Kenyans and instead preach peace and harmony. We urge both the government and opposition” to desist from engaging in acts that may divide the nation even further”.added the statement.
The bishops have also called upon all state agency or politician to respect the rule of law saying nobody was above the law in the country.
