Tension remains high in Marsabit as youth demonstrates, destroy property over arrest of local sheikh

BY CORRESPONDENT,MARSABIT,13TH JAN 2018-A move by police to arrest a local religious leader in Marsabit  has led to widespread demonstrations from the youth in the  town on Saturday with Property of unknown value being destroyed.Sources told WWW.UPESINEWS.CO.KE that the  local sheikh was arrested by the Anti-Terrorism Police.

Sheikh Guyo Gorsa was arrested within  the town  and the youth, most of whom were his madrassa students, followed the sheikh and officers to the police station. But they were  driven away by police who chased them out  of the police station leading to confrontations.

Among property destroyed in the Millie  are  KCB Bank and and a  Catholic Church whose  windows and chairs were broken. guard at the church was also beaten up and injured .

Police officers engaged in running battles with madrassah students and other youth who joined the protest.

According to Marsabit OCS Charles Mwangi who confirmed the incident One protester was arrested at the Catholic Church .

The protesters also harassed a journalist who was covering the protests and destroyed his camera.

On Saturday, police said the sheikh is linked to a network that recruits youths on behalf of Al-Shabaab.

It is not the first time the  sheikh  is being arrested .In  2014 he was arrested  at the Coast over suspicion of radicalising the youth, and was later released. At the It was alleged that he had links to radical groups.
