BY NAMULONGO PETER ,NAIROBI,18TH DEC 2017-Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi is a happy man after his election as the chairman of the influential parliamentary Public Accounts Committee.
Mr Wandayi was pronounced winner after garnering 15 votes out of the 18 MPs who voted against closest challenger Nambale MP Sakwa Bunyasi who got three votes.
The member of parliament who is serving his second term has been a big critic of ruling Jubilee Party has promised to discharge his mandate without fear and favour.
He has also promised to adhere to the constitution even as he carries out his mandate devoid of witch-hunt .
“This committee shall conduct it is business without fear or favour. With the support of other members, we shall ensure that public funds are spent well,” Mr Wandayi said.
On the other hand, Kibwezi East MP Jessica Mbalu was elected as the vice chairperson of the committee.
She has asked committee members to maintain unity of purpose and avoid divisions along political lines.
Mbalu managed 11 votes, beating her competitors— Busia Woman Representative Florence and Tongaren MP Eseli Simiyu— who got five and two votes each , respectively.
“I want to assure members that I will let them down,” Ms Mbalu said.
