BY NAMULONGO PETER,NAIROBI,5TH DEC 2017-President Uhuru Kenyatta has assured the 3rd United Nations Environment Assembly conference currently ongoing at the UNEP in Gigiri NAIROBI that Kenya will continue to play its role in supporting efforts aimed at keeping in check environmental pollution.
Speaking during the opening of the Assembly at the UN Complex, Gigiri that brings together representatives from across the world on Tuesday,the head of state has also appealed to the heads of states and all players to ensure that they get rid of all elements that pollute environment such as plastic bags.
Giving an example of Kenya which banned usage of plastic carrier bags a few months ago,Kenyatta says taking such a decision has never been easy especially if the population has depended on its use for many decades but saying it was the only way war on environmental pollution will be won.
”Some months ago, we banned the manufacture, sale, or use of plastic carrier bags. The ban was backed by fairly severe measures, as one might expect, given the gravity of pollution by plastics in this region’s land, air, water, and marine ecosystems” he affirmed.
Kenyatta has also urged citizens to work together with their government in achieving the dream of pollution free world.”If citizens can work with their governments to end such a ubiquitous source of pollution, then they can move on to even bigger, more demanding targets. We now know that maintaining high levels of ambition in fighting pollution is an achievable and positive undertaking” he said.
The president has also urged the conference to an allow Kenya to hold the fourth united Nations environmental assembly that will be held in the year 2020 in order to take stoke of the achievements .
